CLINICIANS

MARIAM SHAFIK

Mariam Shafik, M.A. is a clinical psychology postdoctoral fellow providing psychological services under the supervision of Dr. Marlena McEachron. She specializes in treating adolescents and adults with anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, and eating disorders. Trained in a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused cognitive therapy (TF-CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic therapy, she also incorporates expressive interventions such as play and art therapy, family systems interventions, and mindfulness-based skills.

Mariam’s therapeutic approach combines evidence-based practices with warmth and compassion, creating a safe environment that encourages clients to open up. Through clinical assessment and personalized intervention, she helps clients expand their repertoire of healthy coping skills and guides them in applying these strategies in daily life. By teaching clients to navigate challenges more effectively, she enables them to enhance their relationships, change unhelpful patterns, and lead more fulfilling lives.

Currently, Mariam heads the Skills Plus program at Northstar Center, a DBT-informed supportive outpatient program, where she provides individual therapy, individual skills sessions, and phone coaching to clients requiring enhanced outpatient services. She also conducts neuropsychological and psychological evaluations for children ages 6-16.

Mariam earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from George Mason University in 2018, followed by her Master of Arts and Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, D.C. She completed her doctoral internship at the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (JLG-RICA), a highly competitive APA-accredited adolescent residential facility in Maryland. As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, she supported residents and their families in various capacities, providing crisis management, family therapy, and conducting psychological evaluations while delivering individual and group therapy as part of an on-site comprehensive DBT program.

In addition to her experience at JLG-RICA, Dr. Shafik has worked in diverse settings, including a military community hospital, a charter school in Washington, D.C., an outpatient clinic, an eating disorder residential facility, and a homeless shelter.
